Asuu makes new demands .

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) Chapter, has demanded the payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) unpaid since 2009 to lecturers in the institution.The union’s demand was made known in its bulletin obtained by newsmen on Tuesday in Lagos.The demands, signed by its Secretary, Dr Tony Dansu and the Assistant Secretary, Dr Adeolu Oyekan, indicated that the EAA was a product of the ASUU/Federal Government Agreement of 2009, which redefined the minimum benchmark for university administration in Nigeria.ASUU-LASU said that the Lagos State Government and LASU’s administration had since then implemented the agreement in breach of the agreement, as it remains the only universityyet to pay any fraction of the allowance throughout the country“The EAA, it should be noted, was part of the negotiated emolument of academic staff whose payment was deferred by the university when it started to implement the new salary structure....

The Federal Government has said that talks with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have so far been fruitful, expressing optimism that the ongoing strike by the university teachers, will soon be called off. Poly lecturers begin nationwide strike Yesterday. . The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has said it is embarking on an indefinite nationwide strike on Wednesday (today ). The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike.According to the union, the strike is to protest the poor funding of Nigerian universities.Led by its National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU declared the strike at the end ofits National Executive Council (NEC) meeting heldat the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State.All academic staff of universities were directed to withdraw their services immediately.ASUU specifically cited, “Failure on the side of the government to honour the memorandum of action signed between the union and the federal government in 2017” and “Renegotiation with ASUU which the government intentionally ignored with impunity” as its reasons for embarking on the strike.
